2017 Essay Contest and Tuition

For the 2017 Liberty Symposium (June 21 - 24th in Boise, Idaho)

“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right, from the frame of their nature, to knowledge, as their great Creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge; I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers.” — John Adams

writingThis year’s essay will focus on exploring and understanding the above quote by our second president, John Adams. Read it several times. He speaks to the preservation of our liberty. He also states that the people have: “an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right” to know “the characters and conduct of their rulers.” Explain why you think Adams was concerned about this. When writing your essay you might want to look up quotes from other American forefathers and see if you find any correlation between liberty and a moral society.
